In this series, reporter Shawn McAvinue speaks to a member of a Dunedin motoring club. For this instalment, he talks to Otago Southland MG Car Club member John Noble, of Mosgiel, before he went on the club’s latest run.
Q: What is the purpose of this run?
It’s to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the release of the MG F model in 1995.
Q: What’s the run route today?
It’s about 60km – meeting in Mornington before heading out to Brighton, over Scroggs Hill and finishing at the Taieri Aerodrome for afternoon tea.
Q: When and where was the club founded?
In Dunedin in 1949 – it was a spin-off from the Otago Sports Car Club.
Q: How many members in the club?
Between 60 and 70 from across the South. The club is based in Dunedin and we go on a monthly run – usually for a cup of coffee in places ranging from Port Chalmers to Raes Junction.
Q: Is the club membership in good health?
No, it’s down due to an ageing membership but it’s in good spirits.
Q: What’s the age range of members?
Early 40s to late 70s.
Q: The oldest car in the club?
An MG M-type produced by the MG Cars between 1929 and 1932.
Q: The newest car in the club?
A 2003 MG TF.
Q: What is the appeal of MGs?
They’re a nice car.
