Former speedway president honoured

Former Central Motor Speedway president Daryl Ainsley will be honoured in a two-day memorial next Friday and Saturday.

Two years after his untimely death in a car accident, the Cromwell circuit will host a fun day on Friday ‘‘for Daryl Ainsley's family, friends and those who knew ‘Mr 110%' to get together to honour a man who not only had a huge influence on Central Motor Speedway, but also was in many ways one of those rare individuals who make an impact on the lives of many’’, a statement on the club’s website read.

Committee member Whetu Taewa said the day would include ‘‘the fun activities that Daryl enjoyed and did himself’’.

‘‘He was a bit of a car enthusiast and had an Impala that he used to go on cruises in. Everyone is welcome, and welcome to bring their cars,’’ he added.

Those interested are asked to meet at The Gate in Cromwell at 10.30am and participants will travel in American and other classic cars on a poker run around the Cromwell area. The final stop will be Ainsley’s favourite camp site at Gravelly Gully.

The following day, the Daryl Ainsley Memorial Meeting, which includes the Southern Sprintcar Series final, will be held at the Central Motor Speedway from 4pm.

Last year, more than 100 speedway cars, drivers and crews from all over the South Island paid tribute to Ainsley and competed for the inaugural Daryl Ainsley Memorial Trophy.

Also racing will be super saloons, V8 saloons, six shooters, youth ministocks and productions cars.
