Electric car creates interest at Clubsport

A HOMEBUILT, electric-powered vehicle created plenty of interest at round three of the Southland Sports Car Club’s Evolution Motorsport Clubsport Championship at Teretonga Park, near Invercargill, last Sunday.

Duncan Cairncross, of Gore, entered the autocross event in his LVVTA, a self-built car powered by an electric forklift engine. The car was 100% electric and had an output equivalent to 500 horsepower.

“Wicked” was the description of the car’s performance by Southland Sports Car Club co-ordinator Malcolm Mitchell, who took the wheel for a run.

The LVVTA was the latest unique vehicle to feature at the club’s ClubSport events where a range of vehicles from family sedans, sports cars, utes, competition cars, electric vehicles and crosskarts had all contested various events in recent times. The club also had the Evolution Motorsport Nissan Sentra available for anyone who would like to have a go at a motorkhana.

It was Andrew Lawrie, of Invercargill, who took the honours on Sunday. However, winning both the motorkhana and the autocross just as he had done at the second round of the championship last month.

In the morning, he took his Mitsubishi Mirage, now powered by a V6 engine, to a win in the motorkhana just pipping Craig Allan, of Invercargill, in a Honda Prelude with Jeremy Lennon in a Toyota Starlet third.

In the afternoon, Lawrie used the Mirage to win the autocross, this time from Liam MacDonald, of Invercargill, in his Nissan NX with Josh Cooper third in his Toyota.

Thirteen-year-old Euan Bergius was the youngest competitor in the autocross.

Bergius made his ClubSport debut in motorkhana at the beginning of last season as a 12-year-old and contested his first autocross on Sunday acquitting himself well in his Nissan Pulsar.

Lawrie leads the Motorkhana Championship after three rounds from Allan and Andrew Kennedy while Liam MacDonald heads the autocross points from Lawrie and Stacy Lines.

The next round of the Evolution Motorsport ClubSport Championship would take place on Sunday, November 22.

The club is always keen to hear from anyone who would either like to give ClubSport a go or even just come out to take a “no obligation” look at the sport to learn more about it.
