Arron Black reckons age is no barrier to getting faster as his birthdays keep ticking by.
The Dunedin racer is proving he is as adept in a kart, as he is in an endurance race car, by defending his KartSport NZ South Island Sprint Championships 125cc Rotax Max Heavy title last weekend on his home track.
His only complaint was the scarcity of competition, as he led from start to finish in his recently-purchased kart.
At 47, Black well and truly qualified for the master’s trophy — for drivers aged over 30 — taking that piece of silverware home as well.
Today he will again team with his brother Stu as they look to clinch the South Island Endurance Series’ (SIES) three-hour Class A (0-2000cc) win. The siblings are sitting an impressive eighth overall after three rounds, going into the final race at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, in Christchurch.
When asked how they have achieved this feat in their BMW E46 WTC, among the supercars and GT3 giants, Black put it down to being consistent at the previous rounds.
In the SIES one-hour championship, Alexandra’s Bruce Davidson is locked in a close two-way battle for Class C (3501cc-plus) glory. Five-points separate his Chev Corvette C6R and the Nissan Skyline R32 GTR 275 of Timaru brothers Murray and Karl Beeby. Davidson needs to finish ahead of the Beebys to take class honours.
