Summer series heads to Timaru

The country's summer racing series heads to Timaru's Levels Raceway this weekend hoping for improved weather after the hail and sleet of last weekend's round at Invercargill.

Southland driver Damon Leitch has a narrow eight-point lead going into the second round of the 2012 Toyota Racing Series and although international drivers outnumber locals three to one, Leitch's closest rival is another Kiwi, Nick Cassidy.

Australian Jason Bargwanna took a slim round victory in the NZV8s last weekend from Angus Fogg, of Auckland, and Martin Short, of Hamilton, finishing 1-3-2.

However, Fogg rebounded on Sunday to win both races in the wet to maintain his championship lead. Defending champion Andre Heimgartner, of East Auckland, won all three Formula Ford races but the home crowd had reason to celebrate when Brendon Leitch finished second overall for the round.

This weekend features all the above classes plus the V8 Utes, Suzuki Swift Sport Cup, Sports GT and Production GT categories.
