Young Aucklander Nick Cassidy has left Timaru with the lead in the Toyota Racing Series with the teenager from Invercargill Damon Leitch just eight points back.
Cassidy won two of the weekend's three races with fellow Kiwi Leitch winning the last race keeping the field of 15 international drivers at bay.
"I'm really pleased to leading the championship and am a little surprised to be on the podium for race three,'' said Cassidy. "I took my chances and made some passes but the championship isn't too important at the moment as there are still a lot of races yet.''
Leitch lead the series coming into Timaru but a fifth place in race two dropped him to second heading into race three. When the lights went out Leitch got one of the best starts seen in a long time, and when he hit the back straight he had a commanding lead that was never challenged.
"I got off to a great start and am really happy with the win,'' said Leitch. "I was pushing pretty hard early on and kept working at it.''
Russian driver Dimitry Suranovich took advantage of the reverse grid top six race and held off the chasing pack of Cassidy and company to get his first podium of the series.
The big mover of the weekend was another Kiwi, Jono Lester, who arrived languishing in an unfamiliar 12th on the table. He left the circuit a happy man having rocketed up to fifth equal in the standings with an eighth and two fourths.
In race two the leading pair of Bonifacio and Van Asseldonk came unstuck at different times, letting Cassidy slip through to take the lead and win from Puerto Rican Felix Serralles and Brit Jordan King.
"Right from the start I could see the track was going to dry out,'' said Cassidy.
"The other guys around me were racing pretty hard so I just had to look after the tyres and that was the key really.''
The co-leader in the championship after four races, Leitch was in the hunt early on only to over-cook it going into the hairpin and had to settle for fifth.
"I just looked up the back wheels and ran pretty wide out on to the grass,'' said Leitch. "It was hard to recover from that to come back to fifth, which is not too bad.''
Angus Fogg continues on his inexorable march towards winning his first BNT NZV8 championship with a commanding performance at Timaru. He put the rest of the field to the sword with two wins and third to lead the championship from Australian V8 Supercar driver Jason Bargwanna and find of the series Martin Short.
In the third race of the weekend the Aucklander cleaned out the field by half a lap.
"It's been a fantastic weekend and we've been pretty dominant,'' said Fogg. "We're better placed than last year but we've only had average rounds at Manfeild and Taupo [next two events] in the past.''
Nick Ross made the most or the reverse grid second race and went on to claim his first V8 race win and was followed home by Short and Fogg.
"It's about time I got my first time, it's been a long hard five years,'' said Richards. "It's good to reward the boys with a win.''
